My name is Sophie Darch McEntee and I believe that when mothers awaken to their power and worth there will be a revolution.
It is this belief that inspired me to co-create Honest Mamas. Empowerment and knowing our self-worth as mothers requires a lot of honesty and support, and that’s what Honest Mamas seeks to provide.
My commitment to the empowerment and well-being of mothers began in my childhood. I was raised by an overwhelmed, undervalued mother of four. It broke my heart to see my mother, who had so much love and strength to give, living as if being “just a mother” was something to apologize for. As a child I had no doubt in my mother’s value, so to see her disempowered was incongruent to who I knew her to be. It taught me that the radiant power of a mother’s love was not valued, that it was even something to hide. That divine feminine love in myself began to feel shameful, dangerous even.
What began as deep sadness grew in time to a calling, a passion to understand how mothers are socialized to see themselves as less valuable. The capacity to love as a mother loves has been shamed out of our society. I got a master’s degree in Women Studies to learn more about how the disempowered of our society are taught to silence their reality, their voice. I gained a rich feminist perspective, and yet in time I craved a more spiritual and psychological approach. I returned to school to get a second master’s degree in counseling psychology. As a practicing therapist, I am dedicated to mother’s psychological and spiritual wellness.
Shortly after I had my daughter, I struggled to make sense of my new identity as a mother. The experience stretched me to my capacity so much that I often thought I was going crazy…and some days I did. Motherhood continues to teach me about my emotional range and endurance as a woman. From cathartic screams of frustration in the shower to moments of awe and wonderment at my daughter’s whispered conversations with the moon.
Since I became a mother I have longed for a community of support like Honest Mamas. The beautifully rich and daunting adventures of motherhood is always in flux, paradoxical and dynamic. I helped create Honest Mamas to honor this transformational time and to provide mothers with a space for reflection, appreciation, and understanding.
